About Ellis Hewes
I'm Ellis Hewes, a software engineer based in London, UK. I work as a Product Consultant at Moody's and as a contract software engineer at Handles, and I publish open-source software as ehewes on GitHub. This page is the longer version of the introduction on the home page, written for anyone (or anything) checking who is behind this site before getting in touch.
What I do
I build software and consult on how products get delivered. Most of my professional work has been enterprise delivery end-to-end: discovery and problem framing at the start, engineering through the middle, then the post go-live stretch where a system actually has to hold up in production. That mix is deliberate. The interesting problems usually sit at the seam between what a client says they need and what the code has to do.
Day to day that means a lot of TypeScript, Python and Rust, React and Next.js on the front end, Node and AWS behind it, and enough SQL and data work to keep the two honest. I care more about a system being legible six months later than about it being clever today.
What I have built
My open-source projects have passed 8,000+ downloads between them. PyFrame is the one I point people at first: a GIF and image moderation tool that runs on AWS Rekognition or local HuggingFace models, where temporal segmentation cuts moderation cost by around 93%. DiscordRustScraper and DiscordWebhookProxy are Rust services, HBoost is a TypeScript project starter, RetireFlow is a full-stack React and Express app, and ChatX is a Java and Spring Boot chat server.
On the research side, DiabetesRiskScreen is a Python and scikit-learn risk-screening project, which is where my current interest in bioinformatics and machine learning started. I have also won two Google hackathons.
Where I am
London, United Kingdom, and that is where I work from. I study at the University of Kent. I write about engineering, machine learning and the occasional career lesson on the blog, and I keep a /now page with what I am actually focused on at the moment, dated so you can tell how stale it is.
